YMCA Checker and Chess Club
In doing some research
on the North Tonawanda YMCA, Ned Schimminger
accidently discovered one of those photos published
in that organization’s annual, circa 1900. While the
individuals in the photo were not identified by name, we
now know that the image is of the YMCA Checker and
Chess Club and was taken at their facility at the corner of
Main and Tremont Streets in North Tonawanda. Further
research has determined that the club president at the time
was J. R. Simson and M. L. Snyder served as secretary/
treasurer. The purpose of the club was predicated on the
idea that mental training given by the games of checkers
and chess was of practical value in everyday life.. Collection, Historical Society of the Tonawandas. © 2013 Written authorization required.
